Access inside glass-lined vessels

Manholes and handholes are the two access ways inside glass-lined vessels. On small AE type reactors, as well as on small volume receivers, there is not enough space to install manholes. Consequently, to allow access to operators for glassing, they are produced in two parts with a base vessel and a glass-lined cover, fixed together by a clamped main flange.

Bigger vessels, such as BE and CE type reactors as well as storage tanks are manufactured in one piece: glassing operators are accessing inside via manhole.

Handholes and manholes: many functions

Small DIN-AE reactors are fitted with a handhole of the biggest possible opening size on the cover.

Generally including a sight glass, it allows for hand access inside the reactor without having to dismantle the main cover. As soon as their diameter or their volume is big enough, glass-lined inner vessels are fitted with manholes, mostly with a glass-lined manhole protection ring, and a glass-lined manhole cover. This allows the vessel to be manufactured in one piece, without body flanges.

Many functions are associated with manholes:

Pfaudler “Fillook” Technology

Pfaudler Fillook covers are glass-lined at product side, sealed on an O-ring embedded in a PTFE seat – with a DN100 Glasslook sight glass in their centre. No metallic contact on product side.
Pfaudler Fillook handholes and covers offer three functions in one:

  • Clear insight guaranteed by Pfaudler Glasslook sight glass;
  • Quick opening/closing, without tools, of a DN150 to DN200 filling hole.
  • Opening can be used for many functions, such as loading small quantities of products, quick inspections, taking small samples, quick installation of a cleaning lance, etc.

The benefits of Pfaudler Fillook covers as handholes are numerous:

  • Easy to clean – inside and out;
  • Sealing on an O-ring embedded in a PTFE seat -> no need to be replaced at every opening, as it should be the case with flat gaskets;
  • No gaskets on the sight glass;
  • Break proof: total failure of the sight glass is not possible.

All the “Fillook” benefits above are available on the Pfaudler flat manway cover series fitted with Fillook covers.

Fillook covers are available in:

  • Fillook Standard, galvanized
  • Fillook Hybrid, stainless steel cover with fused in sight glass, wetted parts glassed
  • Fillook Stainless, stainless steel cover with bolted sight glass, wetted parts stainless.
  • Fillook Multiport : on DN500 or DN600 manway cover with 1 of the Fillook covers above, 1 additional sight glass with lamp, 2 additional DN50 nozzles.

Pfaudler Glasslook / Fillook Manway Cover Series

The DIN standard 28153 defines traditional manway covers, with or without swaged nozzles, for sight glass and lamps.
With the Glasslook® and Fillook® series of flat manway covers, Pfaudler proposes a modern design with the combination of the benefits of Glasslook glass and Fillook quick-opening covers.
Many combinations allow customizing Pfaudler manhole covers in DN500 and DN600 for end-user needs:

  • Glasslook 3: manway cover with a DN100 fused-in sight glass
  • Glasslook 4: like Glasllook3 but with 2 pieces of DN100 fused-in sight glass
  • Glasslook 5: like Glasllook4 but with a lamp on one sight glass
  • Fillook 3: manway cover with a Fillook cover in its centre for quick opening on a DN150 or DN200 hole
  • Fillook 4: manway cover with a Fillook cover for quick opening on a DN150 hole and a fused-in Glasslook DN100 sight glass
  • Fillook 5: like Fillook 4 but with a lamp on the DN100 sight glass
  • Fillook Multiport: like Fillook 5 but with an additional two DN50 block flange nozzles on the flat manway cover

Other customized manway covers with Glasslook® and Fillook®  technology are possible upon request.
